knowledge: a gift and a curse

being someone with "brains" certainly gives so much advatages. good feedback from mentors, honors at school, proud parents, wider perspective of life and learning are just some of those advantages. but only some "brainees" see the darker side of being such.

some people you consider friends might only be benefit-seekers. some of your true friends could also be your most-feared backstabbers when they became jealous of the things you can do. you can't also deny what you know. you can't spare yourself from being guilty by saying you're ignorant, simply because you are NOT. additional knowledge also gives you additional responsibilities, like always being the leader at group works at school. you can't also blame other people if they can't understand you because they can't just go beyond to your level of thinking that easy.

this is such another evidence that the earth is created in balance. on the other side of the coin, ignorance may also be a blessing, don't you think?

COLORS: A Gateway to Personality

Color is a visual attribute of bodies distinct from their spatial characteristics, depending upon the spectral composition of wavelength. It is perceived by the retina and its associated neural mechanisms. Colors are identified, named, interpreted by our midbrain and cortex. Functional Psychology is the study of theories relating color choice to an individual’s personality. Color of choice is the one a person sympathizes most and must not be associated with clothes or automobiles. Below are the meanings of the colors parallel to the personality of an individual who chooses it.

1. Grey- Grey is neither colored, nor dark nor light and is neutral. Whoever chooses grey as a favorite color wants to wall everything off, remain uncommitted and uninvolved. He is unwilling to take part and insulates himself from direct participation. On the other hand, those who reject grey wants to encompass everything and feels he has the right to take part in anything around him.

2. Blue- Dark blue represents complete calm. Contemplation of this color can reduce blood pressure, pulse, and respiratory rate while self protective mechanisms work to recharge the organism; psychologically, the tendency to be sensitive and easily hurt increases. Blue means loyalty, contentment, contentment and gratification. Whoever chooses blue may need either emotional tranquility, peace, harmony, relaxation or ability to recuperate.

3. Green- means “will in operation”, perseverance, constancy and resistance to change. Whoever chooses green wants to increase certainty of his own value either from self-assertiveness or by acknowledgement he expects from others. This “green” behavior finds expression in gaining better conditions, wants his own opinions to prevail, and feels himself justified as a representative of basic and immutable principles. As a result, he tends to put himself on the pedestal and tends to moralize and lecture others.

4. Red- means desire, all forms of appetite and craving. Its expression is the urge to achieve results, to win success; it is hungrily desires all things which offer intensity of living and fullness of experience. It implies active doing, struggle, challenge, eroticism and enterprising activity. Red denotes impact or intensity of will.

5. Yellow- means cheerfulness, uninhibited expansiveness, change, relaxation and release from burdens, harassment and restrictions. Choosing yellow implies desire for release and hope for happiness. This expectation of adventure which offers enlightment and perfection is always directed to the future. Yellow presses forward towards the new, the modern, the developing and the unformed.

6. Violet- is a mixture of red and blue yet represents its won distinction. Mentally mature people normally prefer one of the basic colors; on the other hand, immature people tend to like blue. Violet means investigating or discovering a little further. It can also imply fantasy. The person who prefers violet is sensitive and appreciative yet, does not want to be involved in responsibility.

7. Brown- Some people who choose brown may have no place for security, comfort, company and fortune. Brown represents sensation as it applies to bodily senses and condition. Brown implies need for physical ease and sensuous contentment. The person may have insecurity, actual physical illness and atmosphere of conflict that the individual feels unable to cope. Safer environment should be provided for these people.

8. Black- is the negation of colors. Black represents absolute boundary beyond which life ceases. It means nothingness, extinction, renunciation, ultimate surrender and relinquishment and has strong effect to any color which the person chooses together with it. It emphasizes and enforces that color and therefore expressing its extremes. The person may be in revolt against fate and liable to act unwisely to this revolt.

The stated meanings of the basic colors above are widely used by psychologists, counselors, psychiatrists, educational specialists and criminologists. Those who choose a color made by the mixture of the ones above may possess the same characteristics implied by those colors.

ANALYSIS ON PHILIPPINE CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE... (para sa mga nahihirapan sa assignment nila)

a. TITSER
Liwayway Arceo’s “TITSER” is a Palanca awarded novel about the struggles of the couple Amelita and Mauro as they chose the course of being low-paid teachers despite of practicality. Even they are discriminated, especially by Amelita’s mother; in the end they had proven the value of their chosen profession.
I personally have read the book; the plot was not that dynamic and sentiments weren’t that extreme. But what struck me the most was the main character Amelita. She wasn’t the a usual central persona with idealistic traits, but she’s just like any other existing being with strengths and weaknesses, making me conceive that I am just reading a journal or anecdote of someone. The reality the novel expresses was just what makes it extremely admirable.
“Titser” is just one of the works of Arceo that had really shown her brilliance in writing. As to the influence, number and quality of her works, I think no female writer exceeds her genius.

The novel “Uhaw ang Tigang na Lupa” was Arceo’s first blockbuster in the world of prose. A masterpiece that illustrates a child’s longing for the warmth of her parents, and a wife’s yearning of her husband’s love; like a thirsty dry land wishing for water or dew. It is a novel, laid out with carefully and artistically concocted lines and dialogues that don’t only build up the plot as a narrative but unfold with the harmony of music. The emotions and sentiments were sincere and the language used was smooth. No wonder “Uhaw ang Tigang na Lupa” has left a mark to the history of Philippine literature that no other can ever wipe away.

c. CANAL dela REINA
“Canal dela Reina” is a creation that exposes the society’s hunger of power and money, and the oppression of unfortunate beneath it. It is about the greedy Nyora Tentay who claims a property she didn’t own and how she reigned and stepped onto the powerless around her. That part of the land of Canal dela Reina was really owned by the family of Caridad, who later thought of getting it back to erase the tragedy of the past and start up new.
When I have read the book, I have noticed that the characters were already introduced at the first chapters, together with how fate had made them intertwined. The plot was in perfect narrative, taking all the pieces together until it had ended in a pleasant cessation.

d. ANG MAG-ANAK na CRUZ
The novel “Ang Mag-anak na Cruz” was about the life of a middle class family living in the contemporary. Tinoy and Remy was the main characters of the story. Like any other work of Liwayway Arceo, the novel is characterized by smooth narration, light emotional expression, and artistic use of language.
When I have read the book when I was in high school, at first I thought it was dull and boring. But as the plot progressed, I have grasped events that commonly happen in real life; including family difficulties and bonding, activism in the 60th decade, teenage gangs, and others. Also, every chapter was of complete thought, like the book was a collection of short stories about one set of characters.
Indeed, “Ang Mag-anak na Cruz” is a novel which illustrates values and reality. It is a work of fiction that will surely live through time.

e. MGA BATHALANG PUTIK
The work “Mga Bathalang Putik” by Liwayway Arceo is a romantic novel about the iniquitous love of Esmeralda and Senen, who are both married when they had met each other. In this novel, the different faces of love was presented, together with the difficulties in marriage and the struggles in making the right decision which will shape the future.
Just as any other of her work, “Mga Bathalang Putik” was one of the genre “popular literature”. It was a work of fine and buoyant use of prose, realistic style, and magnificent writing ability.

f. ANG KWENTO NI MABUTI
“Ang Kwento ni Mabuti” is a short story which won the first prize for the Palanca Award for Literature in 1950. It is a story where a student introduces her Literature teacher as “Mabuti”, for her habitual use of that word whenever they are in class.

In a mysterious room at school, they met. The child had found a friend in her teacher, who sincerely wanted to ease the sorrow in her. According to “Mabuti”, she went there to cry as well. Now she had found the child in there, it will be a secret place they will share to weep for the hardships of life.

“Ang Kwento ni Mabuti” was a story which depicts that even an individual has weaknesses; it is not an ample reason to be cynical in life. “Mabuti” is a portrait of a strong person; even though she’s an ordinary being who commits mistakes and stumbles at times, she didn’t like anyone to pity her. Despite, she makes everyday for her students optimistic and pleasant.

g. WALANG PANGINOON

“Tumunog ang animas. Hindi na gaya ng dating ayaw niyang marinig. Sa halip na ang mga kaluluwang namatay, ay naisip niya ang matapang niyang kalabaw.
‘Mapalad na hayop na walang panginoon’ ang kanyang naibulong.”

The short story “Walang Panginoon” is actually my most favorite story of all I have read. It is about the revenge of a embittered young man named Marcos, to Don Teong who have tormented him, his family, and the don’s daughter who he have loved so dearly, Anita.

The story depicted the art of revenge. Revenge is not only fighting back to the one who have inflicted the wounds you bear, but it is simply nature finding its way to equilibrium- like getting compensation from things that were taken away.

Marcos was a character which will really ignite your consciousness. From being haunted by the ghosts of the past he haven’t put into redemption, he has found a way to smite the giant in a way no one could ever imagine. He has used his carabao as a vector of his retribution.

The story is full of representations and metaphors. Together with the melodic use of lines to patch the incidences, all in all, the elements have created a unique plot and unfathomable insight. From the symbolism of the ringing of the bell for the hour of payer for the dead, to molding the innocent creature as an instrument of payback by the use of the leather jacket, vest, hat, and , the scenario really hooks the reader into indulgence and enthusiasm

I highly recommend this story to my fellow students. Only one word can describe my assessment about “Walang Panginoon” – incomparable.

h. ALOHA

“Aloha” was considered the most valuable masterpiece of Deogracias A. Rosario. The couple Daniel Merton and Noemi was the main characters of the story.

The essence of the story was that love is a solid bind that surpasses differences and distance between two people who are in love. Love is just as strong as it can join the east and the west, the heaven and earth and an urge to fight against the odds; and it is even stronger when it has flourished and bore fruit.

‘Aloha’ is a word that had initiated love between strangers – a visiting American to see through an indigenous woman of Hawaii. It is also an emblem of the nativity and distinction. And, it is also the name of Noemi and Dan’s little child.

i. BANAAG AT SIKAT
“Banaag at Sikat” or “From early dawn to full light” is one of the first literary novels written by Filipino author Lope K. Santos in the Tagalog language in 1906. As a book that was considered as the "Bible of working class Filipinos", the pages of the novel revolves around the life of Delfin, his love for a daughter of a rich landlord, while Lope K. Santos also discusses the social issues such as socialism, capitalism, and the works of the united associations of laborers.
It was long when I have first read the story. But as what I can reme, ber about our discussion about it in high school, it is a story of mixed themes and realistic plot. The story was good and in fact it is one of the first Filipino-language novels. Although, it wasn’t one of my favorites.

“Mabangis na Lungsod” is a short story which reveals the brutal nature of human – stepping onto the weak for pleasure and survival.
The main characters of the story are a young boy named Adong and the heartless browbeat Bruno. Adong was a beggar in front of the Quiapo church, pleading for unfamiliar faces for money that will sustain his existence. On the other hand, Bruno was a tall and built man who has the practice of forcing the little boy to give him his earnings from the day of exhausting labor of torturing wait.
The theme of the story was hostility and repression. It is emotionally appealing of course, but that wasn’t what had made the plot interesting. It was the creative narration and artistic language. The story’s insight is that an individual can easily destroy dreams, future, life and even existence of another. It teaches us that we must be wary of our surroundings, not to be selfish enough and never be contemptuous about the trials we have in life. We must always consider that we may have even have a better fate than the others we’re just too busy to take no notice of.

k. PAG-IBIG
“Ang pag-ibig, isipin mo, pag inisip nasa puso! Pag pinuso, nasa isip, kaya’t di mo makuro”
Pag-ibig is a poem where Jose Corazon de Jesus defined love. It is a poem of 9 stanzas, four lines per stanza and 16 syllablles per line which has no rhyme scheme.
In the poem, he presented the different pahses of love, the cowardly and the courageous, the old and the young, and the true and the fraud. According to the poem, love is an unexplainable feeling which is sincere and true. It is not blind, it has eyes for it sees the beyond a person.

l. WALANG SUGAT
“Walang Sugat” by Severino Reyes is a drama set in the historical events in Bulacan during the Philippine revolution.
It is about the love story of Julia and Tenyong. In the end, when Julia was about to marry a man he didn’t love as forced by her parents, Tenyong made a way to snatch her out of her impending desolate life with the other man, Miguel. He pretended to be dying just to appeal to Julia’s parents to allow them to marry before he dies. When the mass was finished, Tenyong then revealed his treacherous act saying ‘Walang Sugat”.
In the story, I am struck by the will of a man to get the woman he loves. Indeed’ Tenyong and Julia’s love didn’t end wounded and trashed.

m. ANG PRINSIPENG MAHABA ANG ILONG
“Ang Prinsipeng Mahaba ang Ilong” is one of the short stories under ‘Mga kwento ni Lola Basyang”
It is about a prince who was cursed by a devil cat before he was even born as a consequence for what his father had did- free his mother form the cat’s spell.
The prince had grown inside the palace by his parents for him not to be seen and mocked by the people. When he had left the castle, he had met a woman named Gracia who had never looked down to him. When they were strolling in the woods, they had seen two people swimming in a pond who had laughed about the prince’s ridiculous appearance. When the men drowned, the prince had helped them by lifting them up as they hold to his nose.
The story simpli tells us not to be judgmental to those people around us. And also, looks can be deceiving; we can never know who a person is without delving beyond the physical.

n. PILIPINO: ISANG DEPINISYON
“Ano ka? Ano siya? Ano ako? Ano tayo?
SAbi nila'y Pilipino

May ugaling katutubo, may gobyerno at bathala
May samahan at Ibigan, Maayos at payapa
May Sariling wika
Ito tayo, Ito tayo, Ito tayo!
Sa ante-panahon ng Kolonyalismo

Walang kaabog-abog
Mula sa kanluran ang dayo'y sumapit
Ako'y hinamak, Siya'y Inapi, Ikaw ay Hinamig
Siniil ang Laya, Kinamkam ang Yaman
Baranggay ay binuwag, binuwag, binuwag (aaaahhh!)
Mga Tala ay Sinunog

Abakada'y Ibinawal
Ipinasiyang mga mangmang
Ang lahat ng katutubong kayumanggi ang kulay
At naging alipin ang bayan kong irog
Mailoko, ma-bisya, ma-kamampangan, ma-tagalog
Ito tayo
Pilipino

At sa halip, sa halip
Pinalitang Lahat-laht
Gobyerno, relihiyon, ugali at kultura

At yumabong
Ilokano'y Ilokano
Kapampanga'y Kapampangan
Bikolano'y Bikolano
Pangasina'y Pangasinan
Ang Cebuano'y Cebuano
Iyang Wara'y laging Waray
Ang Ilongo ay Ilongo
Mga Muslim laging Muslim
Ang Tagalog ay Tagalog
Kanya-kanya, tayu-tayo
Masawi man ang sampangkat, malipol man ang santribu
Huwag lamang tayo

Walang tutol
Edukasyong popular: kinano ang sistema
Umunlad di nga kasi; Pilipino ay dumunong
Naging kano sa ugali, naging kano sa damdamin
Naging kano sa isipan, naging kano sa pagsulong
Sadyang gayon ang katwiran
Masterin mo iyang wika't
Ang kultura niyang wika'y ikaw iyang mamasterin
Ang nangyari: ang produkto
Nitong ating edukasyon: prospektibong mandarayo
Di gradwadong makabansa, hinding-hindi Pilipino...

Divide et Impera
Ilokano'y Ilokano
Kapampanga'y Kapampangan
Bikolano'y Bikolano
Pangasina'y Pangasinan
Ang Cebuano'y Cebuano
Iyang Wara'y laging Waray
Ang Ilongo ay Ilongo
Mga Muslim laging Muslim
Ang Tagalog ay Tagalog
Kundi rin lang itong akin
Mabuti pa ang sa dayo
Ito tayo
Plipino: Isang lahing maka-ako, tayu-tayo

At nagdilim
At kumulog at kumidlat at lumindol
Nagliliyab, nalulunod

Ay, salamat sa karimlan
Ay, salamat sa magdamag
At sumilay ang liwayway
Ng maningning na liwanag ng
Isang phoenix ang nagbangon
Sa abo ng lumipas
Nagmistulang manunubos ng naamis nating palad
Kaguluhan ay Inayos, mga giba ay binuo
Nilipol ang kasamaan, kayarian ay binago
Tenance, ekonomiya, sosyedad, gobyerno

Masasabing taas-noo
Ikaw, siya, saka ako'y
Mga bagong Pilipino”

“Pilipino: Isang depinisyon” is one of the most beautiful patriotic poems I have read. It was one of the works that I will never forget for it is the choral reading piece we used to perform for a speech choir contest when I was in high school. It is a free-flowing narrative poem which tells about what our country have gone through to be as it is today.
Although it doesn’t have a rhyme scheme and syllabic measure, it is inventive as it uses repetition of words, lines, and stanzas. That creativity, together with the fluent use of speech had made the poem simply dramatic.

p. ANG PANATA NI PILAR
“Ang Panata ni Pilar” by Amado V. Hernandez is a short story about a sacrifice of a woman of her forties named Pilar, for the love of her life Ruperto. In the story, Pilar’s nephew was the one narrating the tale of his aunt. He went to her house for a vacation. There he had wondered why a woman of stunning beauty and intelligence like her aunt haven’t ever had a husband. In one instant, his aunt became ill, that’s when he tried to ask Pilar about it. Then, Pilar told him her tragic love story.
The story depicts the definition of love – sacrifice. Ruperto had saved him from death when Pilar’s house was caught in fire. He even tried to save their riches as told by Pilar’s father. As a consequence for his sincere deeds, he almost died and in conclusion, he lost his sanity. Not only Ruperto was the portrait of sacrifice here in the story. Pilar, in return never had loved and married another man. She had kept Ruperto in her house, reminding her everyday of their failed love.
This story is also a mirror of the Filipina’s loyalty to their love. Though not that recognized, indeed, “Panata ni Pilar” is a captivating story that will surely amuse its readers.
